Family: Anatidae                                         Blue : wintering grounds

Diet: Herbivore, feeding on shoots, roots, and seeds of grasses and forb, berries and cultivated cereals.

Reproduction: Sexually mature at 2 years. Mating, which starts during the spring migration, and egg laying occurs between March and June depending on the region. The 5-6 eggs are incubated by the female for 28 days. The young fledge after 63-86 days.

Longevity: Up to 23 years in the wild and 42 years in captivity.

Predators: Most carnivores, including coyotes, red foxes, gray wolves, the coyote and large birds of prey.

Status: Not at risk. However, in spite of major increases in the last century, there has been  an important decline in the northern population in Québec.
