Diet: Herbivorous, feeding on lichens, mosses, fruits, grasses, mushrooms, roots, bark, leaves and twigs Reproduction: Sexually mature at 18 months to 2 years. Mating occurs between late September and early November. A single calf is born between May and early June after a gestation period of 8 months, and is weaned after 4 months.
Longevity: Up to 15 years in the wild and 27 years in captivity.
Predators: Gray wolves, grizzly bears; young may also be taken by black bears, Canadian lynx, wolverines and golden eagles.
Status: Not at risk as a species, however, several populations are of special concern, threatened, endangered or extirpated in Canada.
