Family: Canidae

Diet: Carnivorous , feeding principally on lemmings and voles, it also takes  birds, eggs and carrion.

Reproduction: Sexually mature at 9 to 10 months. Mating occurs between February and April. The 6-11 cubs are born between April and June after a gestation period of 2 months, and are weaned after 4-6 weeks.

Longevity: Up to 10 years in the wild and 15 years in captivity.

Predators: Gray wolves, polar bears and wolverines; young may also be taken by certain birds of prey.

Status: Not at risk. Its numbers fluctuate cyclically with lemming abundance. The red fox, a competitor which is expanding its range north, could reduce the Arctic fox’s distribution.
