Family : Ardeidae                               Blue : wintering grounds

Diet : Carnivorous, feeding on frogs, small fish, crustaceans, garter snakes, insects and small mammals.

Reproduction : Sexually mature at 1 year. Mating and egg laying occurs between April and July.The 3-5 eggs are incubated by the female for 24 days. The young fledge after 49 days.

Longevity : Up to 8 years in the wild.

Predators : Eggs and/or young may be taken by red foxes, mink and birds of prey.

Status : Not at risk. However, this species has declined due to the loss of wetlands.
