Family: Canidae

Diet: Carnivorous, feeding on large  herbivorous mammals, rodents, hares, birds and insects and small fruits.

Reproduction: The female is sexually mature at 2 years and the males at 2 to 3 years. Mating occurs between February and March. The 5-7 pups are born between May and June after a gestation period of 9 weeks, and are weaned after 5-8 weeks.

Longevity: Up to 10 years in the wild and 18 years in captivity.

Predators: Young, solitary  or sick individuals may be taken by pumas, bears, coyotes, wolverines and Canadian lynx.

Status: Not at risk. However, the eastern Canadian population is declining and there is insufficient information concerning the Arctic population.
