Family: Cervidae

Diet: Herbivorous, feeding principally on, forbs, fruit and mushrooms.

Reproduction: The female is sexually mature at 3 years and the male at 4 to 5 years. Mating occurs from September to late October. The 1-2 calves are born between late May and early June after a gestation period of 8.5 months, and are weaned after 4 months.

Life span: Up to 15 years in the wild and 25 years in captivity.

Predators: Gray wolves, grizzly bears and pumas; young may also be taken by wolverines, black bears, coyotes, Canadian lynx and golden eagles.

Status: Not at risk, despite the fact that its range has been greatly reduced since the end of the 19th century.
