Diet: Carnivorous , feeding on insects, including grasshoppers, small reptiles, amphibians, small rodents, and occasionally birds.

 

Reproduction: Sexually mature at one year. Mating and egg laying occurs between in March and July . The 6-12 eggs are incubated by both the male and the female for 28 days. The young fledge after 28 days.

 

Longevity: Up to 8 years in the wild and 11 years in captivity.

 

Predators: Western rattlesnakes, larger owls, falcons, American badger, skunks, foxes, and weasels.

 

Status: Endangered because of habitat fragmentation and loss, and the use of pesticides to control certain of its prey species.
